Olympic Lifting

Book in for an Olympic weightlifting technique session to learn how to Olympic lift in central Edinburgh.

Olympic weightlifting is becoming increasingly popular and has the capability to ramp up your power and explosiveness. The Olympic lifts are technical movements that require practice, patience and coaching. Poor form will lead to short and long term pain so it is vital that proper mechanics are embedded from the beginning.
Each session is tailored to the individual, catering for:

  • Beginners who have little or no Olympic lifting experience and would like an introduction to the lifts
  • Those who have Olympic lifted before but require their technique to be ‘cleaned up’
  • Competitive athletes (from sports other than Olympic Weightlifting) who want to use the Olympic lifts to improve their sports performance.

The Session

The session will guide you through the fundamentals of Olympic lifting and how to progress from the basic positions to putting them all together in a full lift. You will be guided through a general warm up, a quick movement assessment and then we’ll work on the snatch and clean & jerk. The specifics of the session will be dictated by your starting off point and your goals. Some people will focus on full lift technique refinement; others will focus on basic positioning and working through the progressions towards a full lift.

The progressions:

  • Front squat
  • Hang Pull
  • Hang Clean
  • Clean pull
  • Power clean
  • Full clean

  • Overhead Press
  • Push Press
  • Split Jerk foot positioning
  • Split Jerk

  • Overhead squat
  • Snatch grip overhead press and squat
  • Snatch balance
  • Drop Snatch
  • Hang Pull
  • Hang Snatch
  • Snatch High Pull
  • Power Snatch

For this session it is recommended you will need a pair of Olympic lifting shoes, this is crucial for both the learning of the techniques and safety.

Also, due to the nature of the Olympic lifts, it is necessary to be able to squat proficiently (or at least be familiar with squats) prior to learning to Olympic lift. It is also helpful if you are familiar with barbell exercises such as the deadlift and overhead press. If you are unsure if you meet these requirements then sign up for a self-starter session, squat and deadlift tutorial or get in touch with any questions.
